Complete Guide to
MSME / Udyam Registration in India (2025)

What is MSME Registration (Udyam)?

MSME Registration, now called Udyam Registration, is a government certification for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in India. Introduced on 1st July 2020, it replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) system. The registration is issued by the Ministry of MSME and provides a unique Udyam Registration Number starting with "UDYAM-XX-00-0000000".

Udyam Registration is based on self-declaration — no documents need to be uploaded. The system auto-fetches data from your PAN card and GST registration (if applicable). The entire process is online and the registration is free of cost with lifetime validity.

Frequently asked questions about
MSME / Udyam Registration

What is MSME / Udyam registration?
MSME stands for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises. Udyam registration is the government's online system for registering MSMEs in India. It replaced the earlier UAM (Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum) system. Upon registration, you receive a permanent Udyam Registration Certificate with a unique identification number and dynamic QR code.
Who is eligible for MSME registration?
Any enterprise — proprietorship, partnership, LLP, private limited, or any other entity — engaged in manufacturing, services, or trading is eligible. Classification is based on investment and turnover: Micro (up to ₹1Cr investment, ₹5Cr turnover), Small (up to ₹10Cr investment, ₹50Cr turnover), Medium (up to ₹20Cr investment, ₹250Cr turnover).
What are the benefits of MSME registration?
Key benefits include: collateral-free loans under CGTMSE scheme, priority sector lending from banks at lower interest rates, protection against delayed payments (buyers must pay within 45 days), 50% concession on trademark & patent government fees, eligibility for government tenders, subsidies for technology upgradation, and access to various government schemes.
Is MSME registration free on the government portal?
Yes, Udyam registration on the official government portal (udyamregistration.gov.in) is completely free. Our ₹999 fee covers expert assistance in correctly classifying your enterprise, filling in accurate details, Aadhaar OTP verification support, and ensuring error-free filing so your certificate is issued without delays.
What is the difference between MSME and Startup India registration?
MSME registration (Udyam) is based on investment and turnover — any business can apply regardless of age. Startup India (DPIIT) recognition is for entities less than 10 years old working on innovation/scalability. Both offer distinct benefits: MSME gives subsidies and lending benefits, while DPIIT gives tax exemptions and IPR concessions. You can hold both registrations.
Does MSME registration expire? Is renewal needed?
No, Udyam registration is permanent. There is no expiry date and no renewal required. However, if your enterprise's investment or turnover changes and you move to a different MSME category (Micro/Small/Medium), the classification is automatically updated through integration with Income Tax and GST systems.
