Frequently asked questions
What is FSSAI?
FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. It is the regulatory body responsible for ensuring food safety and quality in India. Every food business operator must obtain an FSSAI license — a 14-digit registration number that must be printed on all food product packaging.
What are the 3 types of FSSAI licenses?
There are three types based on turnover: Basic Registration — for small businesses with annual turnover below ₹12 lakhs. State License — for mid-sized businesses with turnover between ₹12 lakhs and ₹20 crores. Central License — for large businesses with turnover above ₹20 crores, or those operating in more than 2 states, or importers/exporters of food products.
Who needs FSSAI registration?
FSSAI registration is mandatory for all food business operators — manufacturers, packagers, distributors, retailers, restaurants, cloud kitchens, food delivery services, caterers, food importers/exporters, and anyone involved in the food supply chain. Starting a food business without an FSSAI license is illegal.
What are the turnover thresholds for each license type?
Basic Registration: annual turnover up to ₹12 lakhs. State License: annual turnover between ₹12 lakhs and ₹20 crores. Central License: annual turnover above ₹20 crores. Businesses can upgrade from Basic to State license as their turnover grows. Each premises requires a separate license.
What is the validity of an FSSAI license?
FSSAI licenses are valid for 1 to 5 years depending on the duration chosen at the time of application. The license must be renewed before expiry to continue operations legally. We provide renewal reminders so you never miss a deadline.
What are the penalties for not having FSSAI license?
Operating a food business without FSSAI registration can attract penalties up to ₹5 lakhs. Selling unsafe or sub-standard food can lead to imprisonment and fines. The license must be displayed at the business premises, and the 14-digit number must appear on all food product labels.
